Our wind power strategy

Holmen's strategy for wind power is to plan, build, own and manage wind farms on our own land.

The energy system is undergoing fundamental changes as fossil energy sources are phased out, and today onshore wind power is the fastest growing energy source in the EU. In Sweden, wind power is the third largest production method for electricity. 

A large part of Holmen's energy transition has already taken place. It has drastically reduced our fossil emissions, but at the same time we have an electricity-intensive industry.

By combining forestry and electricity production in our forests, we can take responsibility for our electricity consumption.

Green energy from our land

At the same time as we take responsibility for our own electricity consumption through our electricity production, we contribute to the necessary energy transition in society.

 

Wind power interacts well with forestry, as it takes up a relatively small area. At the same time, the roads that are built for wind power can be used to increase accessibility for the public, forestry and transport in the immediate area.

 

By mapping and analysing our large land areas, we can identify areas with favourable wind conditions and take into account each area's unique conditions. This includes everything from consideration for local residents and the environment to the ability to connect to the existing electricity grid.

Progress through nature and technology

We believe in nature, we believe in technology and we believe in the possibilities that exist in the meeting between the two. When we get nature and technology to interact, we can make progress that benefits people, the environment and society.

There has been a great deal of technological development in wind power in recent years. Longer rotor blades, larger generators and taller towers have resulted in a sharp reduction in wind power costs per kilowatt hour produced. As a result, wind power is currently the cheapest way to produce new renewable electricity in Sweden.

We develop, build and manage

Controlling two renewable energy resources makes us unique among forestry and industrial companies. When it comes to wind power, our starting point is that we will manage the wind farms we build. Holmen Energi employs wind power engineers who supervise the wind farms and ensure that they are working properly.
