Today, Sweden's electricity production is primarily based on nuclear power (accounting for over 30 percent of total production) and hydropower (accounting for around 40 percent).
With increased average energy consumption, a growing population, and planned partial decommissioning of nuclear power capacity, renewable energy production is expected to become increasingly important in the future.
As part of the commitment to the UN's Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, the government has decided to implement the largest environmental and climate investments in Swedish history, with the goal of achieving 100 percent fossil-free electricity production by 2040 and becoming completely carbon neutral by 2045.
