Growing, healthy forests, efficient management of raw materials and circular ecosystems are vital to our profitability. They are also the cornerstone of a genuinely sustainable business.
The forest binds carbon dioxide during growth and is further processed into products that continue to store carbon dioxide. After use, the wood can be recycled or used as bioenergy, which maintains its climate value.
Holmen uses forest resources efficiently by creating products with high added value. Residual products are reused in other processes, supporting our business and sustainable resource management.
By offering renewable products from forest, wind and water to quality-conscious customers globally, we together with them make a positive difference for the climate. Their choice to choose renewable contributes strongly to our circular business.
We strive to develop products and processes together with our customers and industry associations to facilitate recycling and promote the green transition towards a circular economy.
By integrating our products into a recyclable system, where the recycled paper process continues to use fresh fiber, we create a sustainable circular chain in collaboration with our customers.
We work to be a positive force in society and focus on three areas where we have the greatest opportunity to make a difference, not only in the future but already today.
We are part of a value chain where climate benefits are created at several stages and we control large parts of the chain themselves.
Climate benefits at several stagesWe do the greatest benefit for the climate together with our customers. Their choice of renewable products means that the world avoids fossil emissions.
Customers' choiceWe are committed to our employees and local communities. We strive to be an attractive employer with a healthy and safe work environment.
Sustainable workplaceHolmen uses the forest's resources efficiently by maximising the timber harvest from the trees we harvest. The shape of the tree trunks limits the production of building materials to coarse logs, while the thinner part of the trees and thinning timber is used together with sawmill residues for the production of cardboard and paper.
Branches, tops and bark that cannot be used for other purposes are converted into valuable bioenergy. Holmen's two nurseries produce almost 45 million seedlings annually, which ensures that the forest is continuously replanted and managed sustainably. With certifications for the environment and traceability, Holmen guarantees that all products come from forests that are managed in a sustainable way.
Certifications
5% Branches, tops, bark and sawdust are converted into renewable bioenergy for the production of electricity, heat and biofuels.
45% The thinner part of the trees and timber from thinning is used by grinding or boiling down to pulp for the production of paper and cardboard.
50% The coarse logs, which make up half of the timber harvest, are sent to sawmills to become building materials such as construction timber and carpentry products. About half of the logs are processed into wood products, while residual products such as wood chips and sawdust are used to produce pulp and bioenergy.
