The final was broadcast live on 21 March and against the other eleven nominated buildings – including Kunskapshuset in Gällivare, another Holmen project – Sara Kulturhus came out top.
Chair of the Wood Award jury Rahel Belatchew described why the award went to the arts centre:
“The jury discussed how Sara Kulturhus has set a new standard and came to symbolise the green transition of a whole city.”
The wood for Sara Kulturhus comes from Holmen’s forests in Västerbotten. Holmen’s sawmill in Bygdsiljum produced the glulam and CLT, while Martinsons, part of Holmen, designed, delivered and assembled the building. Sara Kulturhus can thus truly boast locally produced raw materials in the wooden frame of this unique project, in which Martinsons and Holmen played key roles.
